Optical fibre is a modern communication medium used to transmit information in the form of light signals over long distances.

What is Optical Fibre?

An optical fibre is a thin, flexible strand made of glass or plastic that carries light signals from one place to another.

Basic Structure of Optical Fibre

An optical fibre consists of three main parts:

1. Core

The core is the central part of the fibre through which light travels.

2. Cladding

Cladding surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index, which helps in total internal reflection.

3. Protective Jacket

The protective jacket protects the fibre from physical damage and moisture.

Working Principle of Optical Fibre

Optical fibre works on the principle of Total Internal Reflection (TIR).

Light entering the core is continuously reflected inside the core and travels long distances with very little loss.

Used in medical instruments

Used in sensors and lighting
